Research
The Centre supports new research in the areas of gender, social inequities, and mental health.
Our research teams are interdisciplinary and multi-sectoral. Investigators include academics, policy makers, practitioners, and people with lived experience. They work in academia in the faculties of Psychology, Sociology, Nursing, Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Psychiatry, Medicine, Political Science, Social Work, and History, and in government, service provision, and not-for-profit organizations.
The Centre focuses on five overlapping research themes.
-
Mental health reform and policy research examines current mental health and substance use policies and structures in provincial, federal, and other jurisdictions.
-
Our researchers work to fill knowledge gaps about gender differences in recovery experiences, and provide new tools for practitioners working to meet the recovery and housing needs of marginalized populations.
-
There is an established association between poverty and mental illness.
-
We are working to bridge the gap between research that examines the biological aspects of reproduction, and research that considers social and cultural factors on women’s reproductive health.
-
A feminist lens is used by our researchers to study the relationships between race, ethnicity and social class with mental illness and addictions.
-
The Centre also supports research collaborations in the area of mental health recovery that promote citizen engagement.
